Scarf with new stitch I learned…

Tags

, ,

I was on the hunt for a new easy and “full” stitch to crochet. I found this stitch pattern at a website called Crochet Spot and you can find the tutorial HERE.  I thought I would practice on a scarf because I am really wanting a scarf that matches a hat I made for winter last year.

I am using Lion Brand Wool-Ease Chunky in Walnut. It is one of my favorite yarns, mostly just this color.

I also used a J hook to do this. In the tutorial it says to do a single crochet then 2 double crochets, but I wanted it a bit tighter so I went with just doing a slip stitch sorta stitch then the double crochets.

The only problem with this is that I think its very stiff for a scarf. I am using chunky yarn and a smaller hook. I think it will be ok for me. If I make another one I will use a larger hook, or softer yarn. I am mostly wanting to stay warm this coming winter so I think I will be fine and maybe I can soften it up by soaking it in fabric softener. Maybe 🙂

I will post the finished product soon.

Cupcake Purse Red Hat club style…

Tags

, ,

I have been neglecting my crochet and knitting for a while so this is the first project I have done in a looong while.

My mom was requesting a purse for her Red Hat club. So I wanted to get creative. I found this video on youtube HERE.

I made mine bigger. Its a cupcake purse, though my daughter says it looks like a pie purse. Sorry these pics are not that great.  This house doesn’t get much natural light so I have to hunt for good lighting and then I get this highlight from the sun and its dark on the other and I didn’t have time to work on it in lightroom.

The cupcake version:

If my mom wants more “puff” for the “icing” she can add some more rounds to the red.

My mom taught me basic crochet when I was a teen and that was over 20 years ago. I am so old, NOT!

She crochets blankets. I don’t. I don’t have patience so I do smaller jobs.

I just in the past couple of years learned how to follow patterns, learned the abbreviations, and lots of new stitches. I also taught my self to knit, though I am not very fast at it so I prefer crocheting.

The pie version:

New Weiney in the family…

Tags

This is Twinkie our new Dachshund. Isn’t she so cute?  She has the same dad as Nessie and she has 2 more half siblings at my moms.  She is an English Cream but she sure is red. We named her Twinkie for the obvious reasons, she is long like one. She is like a Twinkie with legs.

Soon I will post more pics of Twinkie and the rest of her half siblings because they are here visiting this week.

Front Door finally complete & DIY Ribbon Wreath…

Tags

,

We finally got the front door painted and here it is. I can’t really get a photo from the front of the house because of the screen door, it makes it dark and you can’t really see it.

So tada…

The color is Behr Park Picnic.

Here is the wreath I threw together. It is yellow, light green, dark green, red pink yellow green plaid ribbon, and a touch of turquoise.  It looks really good with the door colors and brings in the yellow walls and the cream siding. If you want a tutorial on how I made the wreath, leave a comment and I will get right on it.

I am almost finished working on the hall bath minus the new tub/shower because that comes down the road. I will post photos of the bath when that is finished.

DIY Burlap Curtain for my new sliding door…

Tags

, ,

I hope the few of you that actually read this blog 🙂 enjoy my DIY and reno posts. I have been kinda working hard, I love this stuff so how can it really be called work?
I hope to have more photos of the house as it gets finished up. There are rooms that are almost done, but not complete yet but I will still post some photos because I can’t finish some things for a while longer due to budget or hubby needs to help when he has time. He has a lot of “honey do list” things as well as his own things he must get done for his self like getting the garage organized so he can get both our cars in it because he doesn’t like leaving cars out of a garage. Over memorial weekend we put french drains in all around our property so that took priority over my inside decorating jobs 🙂 I don’t mind, he needs to accomplish stuff for him self also around here.

Soooooo….

I recently got this wonderful idea to make a burlap curtain for our new sliding back door.

What was I thinking? This stuff is a pain to cut straight and no matter how many times you  measure, it never comes out straight.

But anyways…

Here is Nessie helping out with putting away that cardboard tube…

Here are the accent colors. I really wanted to incorporate many different colors because I like having a bunch of colors in my kitchen. I chose red, lime green, pink, yellow, orange, and dark blue.

I cut the accent colors in strips and then put 3 colors per stripe to really give it a whimsical cottage feel. I think it turned out kinda nautical feeling which blends with the dining sitting room that is nautical. I think the house is really coming together nicely.

So here is the finished product. I literally put in my blood (pricked my finger with pins), sweat (I had the windows open and it got hot before I knew it), and almost tears! I really wanted to cry because I worked on this for 2 days and I was very frustrated putting the uneven pieces together.

DIY: My yellow Lemonade Table…

Tags

,

I had this table and wasn’t sure what to do with it.
It started out oak I think.
I got this wise idea to paint it pink, but it turned out too dark.
I had some sample paint of Behr’s Pineapple so I decided to
paint the table the Pineapple.
I am calling this table the Lemonade Table.
I am not sure what I am going to do with it yet.
When I decorate it all up, I will add a pic to this post.
Or maybe I will put it in the kitty room with a kitty bed on it.
Maybe I will keep it in the dinning/parlor room. I am trying to tone
down the formal feel in there a bit. I am not much into formal but the hubby is.
I just have no idea what I am going to do.
I do know that I am off to start painting walls now,
in Behr’s Caribean Sunrise.
I love that yellow. I had it in my house in NC and now
I am repainting it here in OH.
I can’t afford those expensive furniture paints that other big DIY blogs get.
I just use what I have left over from painting walls, samples, or oops paint that I find.
I even use spray paint.
This is how my table turned out.
My next project is that ugly antique buffet in the background.
It was in a fire, the right side door fell off, and its just plain ugly.
Table before:
Table after 1st coat:
Table finished: I think it turned out beautiful and very cottagey.

Recipe: one of my favorite: Organic Leprechaun Juice…

Tags

, ,

I love juicing with my Champion Juicer.

Here is one of my favorite Green Juices. Its a bit sweet, its smooth, and its a very quick recipe and clean up is fast and easy. I do some recipes that take forever cutting, juicing, blending, and the clean up is dreadful. BUT, its all less work than cooking and cleaning up from a big unhealthy fake packaged food meal.

Organic Leprechaun Juice:

  •  3 Apples
  • 4-5″ section Cucumber
  • 2 handfuls of Kale
  • on occasion, I throw in a chunk of freshly cut pineapple

The following items I throw in a blender with the juice when I feel like a smoothie version:

Pour into your favorite glass, I use Mason Jars to drink from.

Enjoy!

Recipe: Coconut Lotion EASY!

I am a huge fan of Coconut Oil and I am always looking for recipes that use Coconut Oil.

I picked this easy recipe up from Radiant Life and its super easy! The whole family uses it.
I am really loving the Radiant Life website and their blog. Its very informative and has lots of resources for healthy living.

See the recipe HERE on their blog.

You just put your desired amount of Coconut Oil in your Stand Mixer and mix away.

Natural Recipe: Homemade Deodarant Coconut Oil Style

I am always on the look out for natural or homemade recipes that will help me be frugal, environmentally healthy, family safe, etc. so I can spend my money on something else like healthier foods, “slurges” of like a candle on occasion or more money on school stuff. There is controversy on if aluminum is a cause of dementia/Alzheimers. My grandma died with Alzheimers and so I am very weary of anything said to contain “things” that can lead to Alzheimers. So I chose to stay away from commercial deodorants and now make my own. This is one of those recipes that allows me to be healthy as well as frugal. This is not an exact science recipe, so you can work with it to get what consistency you want.

There are lots of recipes if you just do a search.
I like mine personally. It works for people who sweat a lot and it also controls odor.
Radiant Life  has a recipe using arrowroot powder.

My recipe:

  • 1/4 cup coconut oil, more or less depending on how much you want to make
  • Baking Soda
  • Corn Starch
  • essential oil, I used Tea Tree Oil, about 3-5 drops or your desired scent level

First you need to get your coconut oil to a liquid state. If its winter its probably solid, but in the summer mine is usually liquid all the time.

To liquify the coconut oil, I put it straight in my mason jar that I will be mixing in for storing my deodorant. I then put the mason jar in a pot of water to create a kind of double boiler effect, on the stove and heat the water. It doesn’t have to boil as you don’t want your oil to get super hot, just to melting point.

After the oil is liquified, you can start adding equal parts of Baking Soda, Corn Starch and your essential oil if you chose. I start by adding 2 tablespoons. So as you mix it, if you want it thicker, you add equal parts of each again. Keep mixing until it stiffens up enough for you.

I keep mine in the mason jar but I have heard of people using emptied deodorant containers. I personally like the look of the little jelly jars, which are perfect for gift giving if you want to give some away.

You find many versions on line for free. Don’t pay for homemade recipes! I have seen them for sale. I know people want to make money, and I don’t have a problem with entrepreneurship,  but there are too many online for free.  I have collected a lot of these home made recipes over the past several years, and I end up tweaking them for what ever reason. I will share more over time.

Recipe: Mushroom Turkey Burgers…

I went a bit out on a line, as usual, and tried to spice up our turkey burgers. We love burgers but we try to eat the healthier version by using ground turkey.

Saturday night I decided to do this home made recipe and it was delicous. I must say, I don’t really measure out things like this so these amounts are estimates. It was one of those times were I just throw in what I have.

  • 1 pound Ground Turkey (we get ours at Aldi)
  • 4 mushrooms with stems removed
  • 1 small red onion
  • handful of Romano Cheese shredded
  • teaspoon-ish of minced garlic
  • salt
  • pepper

I minced the mushrooms and onions.
Dropped in to the food processor.
Added in the garlic, salt, pepper, cheese, and the ground turkey.
I pulsed this to mix lightly being careful I don’t make it mushy.

Then I formed into several patties.

I usually grill my burgers, even in winter, but our grill is in storage because we don’t have a grill cover for it right now, so I had to cook these on the stove.

I melted some real cheddar cheese on the top and they were ready to be topped and scarfed down.
I top mine with lots of fresh things like tomato, romaine, spinach, some times sliced avocado,  mushrooms, and I have to have some moisture so I use an olive oil mayo and a tad of mustard.

I hope you enjoy this recipe. You can modify it to fit your tastes of course. Nothing in cooking is every written in stone!

Sorry, no photo’s. I thought about taking some but I was too hungry to go get the camera. Maybe next time! I do have left overs in the fridge I will be eating for lunch 🙂 which I will warm back up on the stove since we don’t use a microwave (rarely, I think its a fancy bread box).

Juicing and Joe Cross…

I am not 100% Juicing, maybe if I had someone clean up after me I would be. Well, I could handle the easy clean up if someone else cut all the stuff up for me and juiced it. I just hate to take the time, but in reality, its much faster than cooking a meal. But for me, I have to make 2 meals. One juicing for those of us who do it (me, hubby, and sometimes DD), and the regular meal for the kiddos. I also like to eat and cook. So we incorporate both, but we are going to have to get more serious now.

But I,we, did get the bloodwork results back and it wasn’t a pretty site. So I must get back on the juicing hot and heavy.

One of my motivators is Joe Cross! He is easy on the eyes, he is motivational, and he also has an awesome story.

I love his video Fat Sick and Nearly Dead. When I need a kick in the rump, I like to watch it. Right now I need a kick in the rump. Oh, don’t get me wrong, I am not vegetarian or anything like that. I love me some big ole’ burgers some times. I am, after all, a country girl at heart. I just want to eat healthy, lose some weight, and be smart about what I put in my body most of the time.

I wanted to share some links so you can check Joe out. (click to be taken to the sites.)

If your "board": Pin Stuff…

I was completly “board”, so I pinned a few things.
I am dyeing to Tie Dye somthing, or a lot of things.
I haven’t done it in a few years, or many years.
I ordered a bank card about 6 months ago that was Tie Dye and it just got me in the mood.
And all this talk from Dede saying she wants to become a hippie has drove me to this!
Its all her fault!
Well, really there are other things going on in my life that I am reevaluating and I really am getting tired of acting like a “goody two shoe” well behaved Christian House Mommy, when I don’t feel like I am one, nor do I want to be. I don’t want to be one of those stereotypical Christian Moms, its really  depressing to not be who you really are.  I could really go on about it but I will behave my self.
I want to be me and I think I am part hippie, part country girl, with a few other parts you don’t want
to mess with. 🙂
I just want to be ME!
And if she wants to become a hippie she can, as long as its a Christian Hippie thing 🙂
So, we use to have a VW Jetta TDI, super fun to drive!
I have always wanted one of those VW Vans and yes I would drive it every where.
But I really want a Jeep Wrangler, in Orange or Blue, Tie Dyed!
So here are some screen shots of things I found and pinned!

Pinterest: One of my decorating boards… Aquamarine Me

~~ Scheduled auto posting this since I am busy moving!~~

Since I am moving and I will be redecorating (using my own things and possibly something new, depends on the budget).

Aquamarine is one of my favorite colors, especially to decorate with.

  • it is a bright mood enhancing color
  •  its a calming color
  • its tropical
  • its just beautiful
So here is the link to the board:

Geeky Girls…

One of our favorite stores to shop at is http://www.thinkgeek.com

Here is the latest items ordered:
T-Shirts! Why t-shirts at the beginning of winter (or technically fall)
Dede: Soft Kitty (Sheldon’s song, Big Bang Theory)     &    a Dr.Who Tartis Police Box
I am sure she would have gotten something Captain America, but its all so pricey!
I can picture and hear Penny singing it to Sheldon right now. LOL!
Kiki:  Bat Girl and Flash, cause my girl is a Super HERo!
I personally got my (cheaply made) jacket from Kohls. And do I mean CHEAPLY made, super thin material and the worst plastic zipper ever. I ordered it online and the zipper won’t hardly start zipping, so I went to exchange it and the only XL they had the zipper was completely broken. So I must try another store to see if they have one that zips. If not, I can keep the one I have, hope it doesn’t break, replace the zipper with a nice metal one and line it with something warm like lambs wool material. I guess its a good think I can sew, at least a little sewing lol! I will say the quality of this jacket is extremely bad and I am glad I got it for $21 including shipping (it was $23,  20% off coupon, plus shipping). So if I do tackle the zipper and lining  I will share that.

The side of Spousal Abuse less talked about… battered husbands

This verse is to all the abusers who think “I am not doing anything wrong. S/He deserves it”

“Woe to those who call evil good, and good evil;
who substitue darkness for light and light for darkness; who substitue bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter! Woe to those who are wise in their own eyes and clever in their own sight.”
Isaiah 5:20-21

~~~~~~~~
update on my brother: His ex-wife is claiming he abused her. My brother has NEVER in his life been violent, and neither his first wife or other female relationships have EVER accused him of being violent. It just goes to show how scociopaths work. They lie to their friends, their friends believe her because they have never seen the real “her”. If they have ever stopped to ask her if she hit or did any of the things she was accused of, I know she would get defensive with them. Its her way, she gets defensive and tells you to stay out of it and its none of your business. That is a dead give a way that she is guilty and she doesn’t want to admit to it to you or her self. This women is good at blaming others for her own actions, and she is so good at manipulating people by acting naive that they really believe her. She is not naive, how can an intelligent women who holds degrees be naive?
~~~~~~~~

Spousal abuse is widely know and there are lots of help out there if you are being abused, by your husband.

But what if you are the husband being abused?

Emotionally
Physically

Here we discover a double standard. Its Ok for a wife to get drastic, but men are expected to stick around and continue to be abused because after all, how could that little ol” wife beat up on a big powerful man?

It seems that if a man is being abused by his wife or significant other, that its a sign of weakness because he doesn’t stand up to her. Even if he has, but she still thinks there is nothing wrong with her behavior and does not feel sorry that she does it, nor excepts that she is wrong in her actions.

But what about the strength that he has to endure all this for years so that he can be there for his child/ren? There is strength in that. He does what he thinks is best for his child/ren, staying so that his child/ren have both parents, and that he can support them financially.

He could call the cops on her, like she would do if it was her, but he wouldn’t do that because he would want to protect his child/ren from seeing their mom in cuffs. Then he would be the bad guy.

If a wife leaves her abusive husband, she is commended, as she should be, for getting away, even if she takes off and disappears with no contact for just a month or two. If a husband who is abused takes off in the same manner, he is ridiculed. Being accused of “how could he leave his wife” and other stupid comments from people who don’t know the truth. They only know what the wife says as she acts like the innocent victim, all the while hiding her horrendous acts from those who know her.

People don’t seem to take serious that abuse can and does happen to husbands.

Preface on my brothers story:

I want to start before I spew (yes I am partly spewing because I am tired of the lies and garbage and I want the truth out) and let you know this. The, husband and wife, both did things wrong. We supported both the best we could offering help, even after he left, we offered our help and support for her, which she refused. She has since said a few lies about us, that we were harassing her which all my emails to her were with kind words and I copied all my emails to her pastors wife so that this would not happen, but apparently it has. She has also said that I instigated a situation involving my mom and my brother and a phone call, which I did not and my mom can verify that one. So I am not sure what is going on as she knows that I have never gone against her directly. I have no reason to. She is not an evil person, (at least I didn’t think she was) and I don’t think she is a bad person, she just did bad things to her husband that did effect everyone. You may see some of this repeated but in more details.

I know, my brother has suffered from this for years. This is just some of his experiences.

  • I have seen the blood running down his face with huge gauges out of his face (I took pictures).
  • I have seen other scratches over the years and have heard the stories of “what she did to me this last time”.
  • Our youngest daughter witnessed her with her arm around  his neck, sitting on  him, and she told my daughter to hide his keys so he couldn’t leave.
  • For the first 4 years of his sons life, he wasn’t a loud to be alone with his son because he didn’t know how to be a parent. huh?
  • He wasn’t a loud to discipline his own son because he didn’t know how to do it correctly. And if he did do it, he got hours long lectures over what he did wrong and how it should have been done. After all, she is a perfect parent and he is not.
  • He has said, as well as their son, that they were not a loud around us or to come in our house.
  • He got sex with held from him for about 2 years as punishment for not acting properly. I believe there is a bible verse about that one, condemning that kind of act. 1 Corinthians 7:5
  • I have seen his wife scream in his face and I am surprised the neighbors didn’t see all this.
  • I have heard her words that were cruel and evil beating him down.
  • There are other family witnesses to the accusations.
  • We have heard her tell him all the time to leave or for us to take him home with us.
  • My husband has seen her punch him in the face and her just walk away like nothing happened.
  • We all had looming suspicions of her intentions from the beginning, a baby to tie her here. I am still not convinced on this one, but another family member believes it. As a mother, I can’t comprehend this one.
  • He wasn’t a loud to handle the bills. He never knew how much money they had, what the credit card bills were, and so on. He didn’t care, he thought she was handling everything wisely. I think she was.

This is just some of the things that we have witnessed our selves, and of course we have the hearsay but if you can’t believe someone who does not have a reason to lie to you, you have to believe them. He doesn’t have a reason to lie, (other than when he is trying to avoid confrontation with his wife because he knew he would “get in trouble”) It would have been a hard lie to keep up from the time they dated through the whole marriage. We were supportive of the marriage even though we knew these things. We even let her stay with us while living in AZ to show our support and help to them. We don’t like divorce, but we don’t like abuse either. We really wish it would have worked.

But to continue on…

I just recently found out that while my daughters were over visiting, that the wife called for my youngest. When she came down the stairs, my brother was sitting on the floor with the wife on his back choking him, telling my daughter to hide the keys so he couldn’t leave. When I asked why she didn’t tell me sooner, she said she didn’t know what to do. If I would have known this earlier, I would have done something about it. Like call the police and press charges my self.

As a family, we tried to support them and offer help. But it didn’t help.
We have heard so much and seen so much.

You are probably asking us why we didn’t do something more.
Maybe because he was the husband being abused and we kept telling him to do something to defend his self.
Maybe it was because when we mentioned call the police on her, he begged us not to, partly because he didn’t want to mess up her visa.

If it were my sister, because she would be a women defenseless against a man, we would have done everything possible to protect her.

Why couldn’t we protect a brother?

I guess because you expect a man to be stronger and put her back in her place. But some men just respect women too much to do much of anything. Some don’t won’t to deal with it, or tell anyone, because they would look weak, and men shouldn’t look weak.

But I can tell you, anyone person, male or female, would get emotionally weak dealing with abuse year after year.

My brother finally left, with help. We couldn’t do anything about it, he just disappeared, like women do all the time. Our family did not agree to the way he left. We had offered help. He didn’t want out help, he was afraid of what she might do if he stayed in the city. He was convinced if he left to a hotel or apartment, that she would come after him and then call the cops on him for the very physical abuse she had been dulling out since before they even married. He was scared, didn’t know what to do, didn’t know where to go for help. Men don’t have places to go for help.

We offered help to his wife over and over. She refused. She said she didn’t want us in the middle. Why did she not want us in the middle? Because we knew the real truth? That her little 5′ self was the aggressor? I think so. I don’t think she wants anyone to know what really went on behind those closed doors because she knows we know. And she still want admit to any wrong doing on her part.
My brother would have, as he has proven in the past, stuck with her if she just would have admitted she was doing something wrong and wanted help and forgiveness. Every counselor they had went to pointed out what was going wrong, and she wanted to switch counselors because they were all siding with him. Why do you think that was?

I know my brother is not the easiest to live with. He is snippy and loud. But he is also a push over. He doesn’t like confrontation. He doesn’t communicate well. But forcing him to talk till wee hours of the night when he had to get up for work in the morning, was not the way to deal with him. He felt trap. His loud, not physical, outbursts happened because he felt so trapped and humiliated all the time, in his suffering.

I am not saying she is a bad person in general. She is not. She just doesn’t know how to handle conflict well with out attacking the very people who don’t agree with her or who doesn’t act like she thinks they should.

So if you know a man going through this, don’t think he should be stronger and take care of it them selves. Be strong for them. Take care of it for them. They can’t do anything about it because they truly have been beat down, just like a women would be.

They love their spouse and they know their spouse loves them.
They don’t want them to go to jail.
They don’t want the children to live without a parent.

My brother finally left, and with good reason. He had to get his head on straight. He left for a few months with no contact. He had too. If he would have stayed in town, we all have no doubt that she would have tried her hardest to get him arrested. He had to go through therapy to get over all this control he has had on his life.

He was condemned for it. Yet if he were a women, he would have praised. But instead, he gets called names and his wife is treated like the victim and he is scum. Like I said before, if this was a women, she would be praised for getting away.

Its a double standard.

We have to start standing up for our men who are abused.

I am going to look for foundations to get involved with. I have to do something. I can’t sit by and let men be the monsters when they are the ones abused and don’t retaliate against the wife or significant other.

Join me in my fight!

Share with me your stories.

Let me know of foundations you know of.

Praying for our family is a big help also.
We fight the thoughts to be revengeful. But that is not right. I have to do something positive about this instead. I must use my anger for good.

Here is a list of “red flags” for abuse, and I see A LOT of things that should have been “red flags” that should have caused us to do something. click HERE to see the list.

My New Needles… Knitting Needles that is

For Mothers Day, I ordered, I mean my girls got me a neat little Knitting Kit that I have been wanting for a long time.

It is from Knit Picks and is the TRY IT Needle Set that comes with a set of each kind of needles they offer for the interchangeable circular needles.  (click pic to go to their page to see more info)

I love this set. I now know that I don’t like the Acrylic set, the Harmony Wood works nice, and the Nickel works great for yarn sliding off the needles quickly for you. I found on the Acrylic that the yarn stuck and I had to work to get it off. That is not good for a beginner I don’t think, and I am a beginner knitter. Well, I have been knitting for over a year, but I am still stuck in “newbie” stage and I am trying to venture out of that comfort zone of stockinette stitches.

Here is another neat tool I ordered. It is really awesome. I know have confidence to try cables, button holes, Fair Isle, and more. It is a new knitters dream! (click pic to go to its page)

Here are some other books on my wish list. Please visit http://www.knitpicks.com to find these books. I am only sharing because I love this website. They don’t know who I am, except when I order something from them.

Even if I am never brave enough to try patterns in these books, I still love to have knitting and crocheting books laying around to look at, for encouragement!

Country Kitchens

So if I were to do a country kitchen, some of these might work for me. Only I really like the Old World French Country kitchen style, and I have a picture out of a magazine but can’t find it online.

As usual, I got these photos off the net, they are not mine!

But here are some of my favorites. I could add and add beautiful kitchens all day long, but I have a limit here…..

Love the beams, the cabinets, the shutters, the wood ceilings, the dark island, Just love it!

I LOVE the stone. Also love the natural notty wood cabinets.

My door again! Love it, Want it!

Love the colors of this one and the antiqued finish.

This just looks nice with all those herbs!

I like the cabinets but not sure on the island color and I like greens.

This is romantic feeling to me.

I want a fire roasting oven in my kitchen!!! (yes, I know this is a fireplace but I like the style)

Love the island and the arch on the cabinet.

I like this but it might be a little to “granny” for me.

Love the colors of the cabinets and the columns. Very sophisticated.

This is the green I like, so I love these cabinets and the orange paint, I love the bright and cheeryness of this one.

And who doesn’t love a pretty farmhouse sink? Love reds and Chickens in a kitchen, so “childhood memories” for me. Not crazy about black and white checkers, I think that belongs on the garage floor where I park my imaginary Aston Martin!

Kitchens

We have decided to build a new house because we are moving to a different state.

This means a new kitchen. This is the chance to have the dream kitchen I always wanted.

This means I need to lay the ground work since it will be a work in progess over some time. I know I can’t just order the kitchen I want.

So first I have collected, over years actually, inspiration pictures. Not all kitchen, but of colors I like or just elements I like. I have several Country Living Magazine books and a lot of my inspiration comes from them. I love country kitchens. But for our new kitchen, we have decided to go a different route. We love rustic and if you have read my other blog, you know we love castles and knights. Our theater room is knights and castles.

Since our new house won’t be as big, we had to decide what part of the house was going to be country style and which was going to be “old world castle” which would include our Irish/Scottish decor also. So I guess you could say we have a Celtic Castle decor with a touch of Irish Pub.

I know, we are so not normal. But we don’t care. We don’t like normal, safe, boring beige decor. Its just not us. We like different and I like different themes through out my home.

So we voted and it comes down to our kitchen and living area will house the Medieval Celtic decor.
Since I don’t like things too dark, I am really going to have to be creative. I like my house bright so I need to plan what is going to be the dark. I am thinking the cabinets are going to be darker. We have other dark elements like our leather sectional. But I am really going to wait on those things until we move in. Right now we have to get the basics down, with some type of plan for the future decor to take place.

Here are some of my favorite inspiration pics. I pulled these from the internet by Country Living Mag and from googling. They are not my pics and I don’t claim to own them, I just borrowed them.

#1 This is my dream style cabinet, Gothic Arches. These are so cool! I love the color and the antique finish. I am glad I married someone who use to do this for a living or else I could never afford it.

#2 I love the darkness with the big veiny patterned granite. I like this granite.

#3 If I were doing a country kitchen, I would put this door on my pantry. I think its the coolest idea and really adds something different.

#4 This kitchen is very rustic and we love rustic. I love the ceiling beams in real wood, not stupid fake square put together beams.  Sorry to be so harsh.

#5 Love the real wood shelf. Very Rustic. I should try and fit this in my kitchen.

#6 I like this contrast, the dark cabinets with the lighter granite.

#7 Ok,  I just had to throw in my dream range!

#8 I would love to have a hearth room that looks like this. Gorgeous wood walls.

#9 I found this on a cabinet website, I love the stone. I have always wanted stone in a kitchen especially around a big Viking stove, or a Thermador. And I can’t forget the Pot filling faucet!

#10 I found this by searching for kitchens based on Castles. This is awesome. I wish I could just pick it up and put it in my house, but then it would take up my living room too. LOL! I Love the granite, stone, cabinets, flooring, everything. Maybe all this but switch the cabinet doors out for the gothic style ones from my top.
I would pick another granite though, I like this one, but its not what I want for my kitchen. I want a green based granite.

Something Green,  patterned like this. But I also like that Butterfly Verde something.

TTFN…

I forgot to add my favorite paint color for my kitchen which we had in our present kitchen:

Oh, and I have a chair like this, only in ugly dark blue….  I love this one so much I should have mine recovered, when I get rich!

Naughty Little Weiner…

I received my Daily Dachshund Newsletter today with a funny t-shirt and a story about a guy with a naughty little wiener who ate his carpet. You can read the story HERE. There is even a contest going on.

In light of this story, I thought I would share my Little Miss Naughty – Nessie AKA The Loch Ness Monster who she is named after. She is our sweet little mini wiener. She even sports a shirt that says “Little Miss Naughty”
And for those who will want to correct me on “Loch Ness is from Scotland and Dachshunds on from Germany”: Nessie was named after the Loch Ness because of her long body, so its a physical thing, and the monster thing. We knew she was gonna be a monster right away. But we love her any ways.
 Even when she is:
  • chewing on the edge of the sofa
  • getting in the trash and getting q tips out to chew on
  • chewing on house slippers
  • pulling on my house plant leaves and shredding them
  • chewing on magazines
  • carrying leaves in the house to chew on
  • pooping or peeing on the carpet when no one sees her at the door to go out
  • My favorite: I put all her toys away in her toy basket and then she looks at me with disgust and goes and gets everything back out, strategically placing them all over the floor in a scattered pattern
Its a good thing she just chews and shreds and doesn’t swallow all those things. She just leaves the mess on the floor for me to clean up.
Drum Roll…………………………………….
 Loch NESSIE Monster…
She is not really showing her pearly whites here in anger,
she was chewing on some yarn. Bad Girl!
Look at those sweet little beady hazel eyes!
Nessie and the people she owns….

t-shirt she got for Christmas, she loves it)

Iced Coffee anyone??

A few monthes ago I started playing around with Iced Coffee. I would just take Greg’s left over coffee.

But this week Ree the Pioneer Woman posted a new recipe for making Iced Coffee concentrate that you put in your fridge so its handy for you to drink when you want it.

Click HERE to see the recipe!

I ended up letting my coffee steep for about 12 hours. I put it together after 9pm  then went to bed and got up and drained it around 9. I also had to work on the recipe a bit.

My changes:

  • We went to Aldi’s and I purchased the French Vanilla flavored Coffee and it came in a 12oz package instead of the pound of coffee the recipe called for.
  • I also had to change the water amount because of the coffee difference. The recipe calls for 2 gallons of water and I ended up using 1 1/2 gallons of water.

Ree gives lots of ideas for sweetening like using Condensed Milk, Half and Half, and so on. You know what you like to sweeten your drinks with.

I used Vanilla Almond Milk and Stevia to sweeten my iced coffee. I have to try and stay away from as much dairy as possible. I have done my own “clinical study” and have found that it is linked to acne, as in if I drink or eat a lot of dairy then I break out. So I have switched to Almond milk and its yummy, in vanilla and chocolate form. Dede loves the chocolate and she drinks it all if I don’t get to it first.

But anyways…

This recipe is awesome. I made it and now I just need a special container to put it in. I am having to use 2 pitchers, and I can just see someone thinking they are gettng iced tea out to drink. hehe!
So what I need is this cool jar to keep my coffee in: Click HERE to see jar! Ree also showed this on her site.

I hope you enjoy this recipe. Please check out Ree’s website at

She also has give a ways of really cool things like

  • Le Creuset (my fave)
  • Wustoff Knives (my fave, German Baby!)
  • All Clad Cook Ware
  • Cameras

And she also does Photography Contests.

Check it out!
